Internalisation
A
Deepest level of conformity.
Permanent change of beliefs to fit in with those around you.
Genuinely believe it.
E.g Jack becomes vegan after going to uni - when he’s at uni, when he’s home, all the time.

A
- Temporarily conform in the moment, not when in private.
- Moderate level of conformity.
- Aim for acceptance or avoidance of consequence.
- Why the Nazis conformed to the regime - to avoid punishment.
- Jackie goes to environmental protest to please gf Shauna, not because she believes in it at all.

Compliance
A
- Shallowest level of conformity.
- Doesn’t believe in it at all, doesn’t have any motive for conforming.
- Just for the sake of it.
- E.g Jackie moves in with her uni friends who are vegan. He is still friends with them but takes no action and doesn’t believe in it himself.

Normative SI
A
- The need to be liked.
- Going along with majority to gain approval, fear of rejection. May not necessarily believe in it or agree with it. I.e goes against morals.

A
- The need to be right.
- Supported by Lucas et Al, maths questions study. Greater conformity to incorrect answers when questions were more difficult rather than more easy.
