describe Aschs 1951 study
- 123 male under grads from 3 US colleges
- one participant and 6-8 confederates in each group
- shown 2 white cards, one with a single line, one with 3
- asked to select the line that is the same length as the one on its own
- 12/18 trials, confederates gave the wrong answer
- ordinarily, people made a mistake 1% of the time
- 75% of participants conformed at least once
