Those from higher social classes are doing better than those from lower social classes
Social class is strongly linked to educational attainment in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Expand
Those from deprived areas do less well overall than those from affluent backgrounds. This creates the attainment gap.
What is the attainment gap?
The gap between what is achieved nationally by the majority of Scottish students and what is achieved in the most deprived schools by the most socially deprived pupils. Preventing social mobility.
State the argument that independent schools are classed as charities
Withdrawing charitable status would mean private schools would have to pay more tax.
It’s been argued that the money raised by tax would Improve state schools and improve educational inequality.
On the other hand the parents that pay for the pupils to go to state schools have been already playing tax and not taking up places in state schools.
Back this up with a statistic
Independent schools have a 91% pass rate at Higher compared with 77% in state schools
However this only affects around 5% of Scotlands school pupils.
Education linked with employment. Summarise
Poor attainment at school can lead to difficulties in finding further education or work.
What does it mean for the most deprived not having to pay university fees in Scotland?
It removes one potential barrier to social mobility for the most deprived who would not be able to afford university fees
Argue the other side
Some may argue that there is still a significant amount of money needing to be paid to be able to eat pay for rent and although student loans are available it leaves students at the end of university not able to pay them back
State statistics to back this up
over 60% of pupils from the least deprived areas go to university, whereas only 18% attend university from the most deprived areas in Scotland.
