Social impact theory Flashcards
What is social impact theory?
changes that occur in an individual due to presence or actions of others
Three factors of SIT
number- number of people increases the social impact of what they agree on also increases.
Strength - message is stronger if its repeated by alot of people, will be strengthened if person convincing is an expert
Immediacy - will have more impact if coming from friends rather than strangers
What is group polarisation?
individuals become more extreme in views due to fact that others share the same views. This gives individual certainty they must be correct
Mathematical model for SIT
i = f(SIN)
Evaluation
nature/ nurture- supports nurture side - disadvantage - doesnt consider other factors
holistic view - people can be effected by different factors- disadvantage - cant establish cause and effect and pinpoint behaviour and which factor has more effect
Supporting - Milgrams study - advantage - gives study credibility
Psychology as a science - quantitative date - objective data - easier to analyse and can predict impact of situation for an individual.
