What was propaganda about?

A

Reich ministry of public enlightenment of Propaganda - led by goebbels
Used every form of media to communicate the idea that Hitler was Germans Savior eg posters portraits public meetings and even films with Alfred hugenberg who owned Germany’s largest film company
Stirred up racist particularly anti-semitic and also anti communist feelings

How was propaganda carried out?

A

Majority of the population did not support Nazi when Hitler came to power so he needed to win over the people to ensure that they continue to support Nazis > glorified Nazis achievements > stirred up racist and anti Semitic feelings towards the Jews and communists > people brainwashed > sharp increase in German nationalistic sentiments > supported nazi now so they more popular > secured people’s loyalty > secured power

What was censorship about?

A

Goebbels set up Reich chamber of commerce in 1933 a organisation that dealt with art literature radio music film and newspaper
Censored everything the Germans could read watch or listen to
More important than the propaganda in controlling the Germans
Also ransacked libraries organised public book burning sessions and closely monitored editors of newspapers
Anti nazi newspapers were put out of business controlled radio stations meant that only nazi opinions and Hitler’s speeches heard
Listening to foreign stations such as bbc was punishable by death

How was censorship carried out

A

Controlled information > repress freedom of expression and ideas > kept the people in the dark > easier to enforce the Nazi doctrine > controlled people’s opinions > threatened and afraid would not criticise the nazi > forced to support the nazis which increased the Nazis popularity > secured people’s loyalty and power
