What happened in the Reichstag fire?
Happened on feb 1933. Dutchman Marinus van der Lubbe arrested(accused of being part of a communist conspiracy)
Same reason used to arrest several communist leaders
Charged with arson and attempting to overthrow the gov
Hitler convinced president Hindenburg to invoke article 48
What is article 48?
Article 48 is only able to be invoked by the Reich president
Simply put it took away civil liberties such as freedom of press and freedom to assemble in public and enact law without the consent of the Reichstag
What is the enabling act?
The enabling act was passed on 23 March 1933
50%+ of votes casted to Nazis in the March 1933 elections
Gain huge amount of power with this act
The act of being able to pass laws without president’s approval
On voting day, SA and SS surrounded the building and only Only Nazis were allowed in
Act passed + communist and social Democrat parties banned from future elections

On 14 July 1933 Hitler passed a law making Nazi party the only legal political party in Germany
