what is involved in social categorisation?
involves placing yourself in one particular group and seeing yourself as part of that group

this is when you start to identify with the group more overtly taking on their social norms and attitudes
what is an examples of a way of taking on a groups norms?
wearing a unifrom
what is involved in social categorisation?
this is when individual self concept gets wrapped up in the groups
people start to view their group as better than others and make direct comparisons in order to boost self esteem
who do groups boost self esteem?
make direct comparisons to other groups and see themselves as better
what stage does self concept get wrapped up in the groups?
in social comparison
what are the three variables to in-group favouritism?
- the extent to which individuals can relate and identify with in-group member
- extent to which there are comparisons to outgrip
- relevance of comparison to out group to in group
why does the theory have application
can explain why prejudice arises
