What is Social Categorisation
An automatic act of putting yourself and others into groups. It triggers stereotypical beliefs you may have about groups eg. nerds.
Describe two terms used in Social Categorisation
In- group - group you are in
Out - group - a related group you do not belong to
What is Social Identification
- Absorbing the culture of a group and associating yourself with its norms and values
-Noticing differences between yourself and people in the out-group
Example would be football supporters
What is Social Comparison
Wanting your group to appear better than an out-group to make you and your group experience higher esteem
How can Social Identity Theory be usefully applied
Can help to stem prejudice between groups by changing the group boundaries and creating one big in-group
