(1) The monarch was at the top of the pyramid, the most important member of the nobility

(2) -Those whom had been given or inherited a title by the monarch (Dukes, Earls)
- Only male, upper class ‘gentlemen’
(C) The Gentry
(3) -Often owned large amounts of land, often had knighthoods
- Male, upper class ‘gentleman’
(C) Yeomen
(4) -man who owns a small amount of land or an estate
- lower gentry, middle class
(C) Tenant Farmers
(5) -farmer who rents land from a yeoman or a gentry(lower-middle class)
(C) Landless or labouring poor
- deserving poor deserved help/charity
- bottom of the scale, unskilled labourers and the unemployed

It was usually determined by how much land you had and whether you owned or rented it.
In 1558 society was:
- violent and dangerous
- no police force or permanent army
- keeping order relied on a clear social structure
- equality was not important to Elizabethans

-(1) wealthy, buying, selling, travelling & trading
(T) Professionals
-(2) Lawyers, doctors, clergy, teachers

(3) -usually highly skilled craftsmen, employed others
- silversmiths, glovers, carpenters, tailors
