What was the role of Parliament?
- Grant extraordinary taxation
- Pass laws (Acts of Parliament)
- Offer advice to the monarch
What was the Privy Council made up of?
- Approximately 19 members
- Leading courtiers, advisers, nobles.
- Senior government officials(Sir William Cecil)
What could the Monarch do?
- make government policy/important decisions
- declare war & make peace
- call & dismiss parliament (agree/disagree)
- grant titles, lands, money & jobs
What was the role of the Court?
- Entertain & advise the Monarch
- Public display of wealth & power
- Had influence with Monarch rather than power
(Attending court required the Monarch’s permission)
What was the Court?
A body of people who lived in, or near the same palace or house as the monarch
How many times a week did the Privy Council meet?
At least 3 per week, & the meetings were often attended by the Monarch
What is a JP (Justices of Peace)?
- large landowners who kept law and order
- unpaid, they report to the Privy Council
How was the parliament controlled?
- could only be called & dismissed by the monarch
- elections were held before each new parliament, but not many could vote
- elizabeth called parliament 10 times during her reign
What was the Royal Perogative?
Areas only the monarch had the right to decide upon
foreign policy, marriage, the succession
Who were the Lords Lieutenants?
- Members of the nobility (often Privy Council)
- Chosen by the monarch
- each county had one
What was the role of a Lords Lieutenant?
-Maintain Monarch’s power and england’s defences
-raised & trained local militia
-oversee county defenses
oversee enforcement of policies
-part of local government
What did the role of a JP include?
- ensure all social & economic policies were carried out
- hears county court case every 3 months for serious crimes
- part of the local government
(position of status, so very popular job)
Who was the Secretary of State?
- Elizabeth’s most important Privy Councillor
- Closest government member
- Advises Queen
(Sir William Cecil until 1573, then became Lord Burghley)
(Sir Francis Walsingham preceded him)
