Saw cyclists were faster when part of a group than when completing laps individually and hence decided to replicate with children where he instructed them to wind string onto a reel as fast as they could. He found that children who performed the task amongst others were quicker.
He suggested “an improvement in performance due to the mere presence of others”
An effect he called social facilitation
Quote by Triplett 1898
“An improvement in performance due to the mere presence of others”
Dashiell 1935
supported the idea of social facilitation by finding that the presence of an audience facilitated performance by increasing the amount of simple multiplications completed
However, who found contradictory results?
Pessin 1933
what did Pessin 1933 find
subjects needed more trials at learning nonsense words in a list in front of an audience
this is called social inhibition
What is social inhibition
the tendency to perform worse when performing in front of an audience
It was concluded what?
that the extent of social facilitation/inhibition depends upon the nature of the interaction between the task and the performer
there are 2 types of social facilitation
co action effects
audience effects
co action effects
