What do social explanations see gender dysphoria as?
Being learned for example by operant conditioning where individuals are reinforced for exhibiting cross gender behaviour
What does the learning theory argue?
That parents of gender dysohoric children may have reinforced the condition by encouraging and complimenting their children for such behaviour

That gender dysphoria results from distorted parental attitudes
What did Stoller find?
In clinical interviews with individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria, Stoller observed that they displayed overly close and enmeshed mother son relationships
What did Zucker suggest?
In the case of female to male transsexuals, female identity as males because of servere parental rejection in early childhood, unconsciously they think that if they become males they might gain respect from their father
What did Gehring and Knutson do?
Studied a sample of 42 transsexuals (32 born as men and 8 born as women) and found that 23 (55%) reported some form of unwanted sexual event at an average age of 14
