We learn gender appropriate behaviour through watching others being rewarded for behaving a certain way

Men are more likely to be portrayed as being in control, while women are at the mercy of others
What did McGhee and Frueh find?
Children who are exposed to such models on tv display far more stereotyped behaviours, and hen the media shows people behaving in gender typed way and succeeding, this increases the feeling of self efficacy in the viewer

The way men and women are portrayed in TV ads
What did Manstead and McCulloch do?
Observed 170 ads over a one week period, they focused on the central adult figure and recorded frequencies that males and females occur in a variety of different roles

The relationship between language and gender in social media by analysing 78,000 twitter messages, to find strong evidence of gender driven language
