Q

Explain patterns of socialisation…

A

Process where we learn the norms, customs, and skills necessary to participate in society, which is a major reason for gender differences in criminal behaviour

Edwin Sutherland (1949) stated that during socialisation boys are encouraged to be risk-takers and tough, while girls are more closely supervised and controlled

Society expects girls to be more confroming than boys, causing differences to be ingrained and leading to more young men becoming criminals as they have the inclination and opportunity to commit more crime

A

Social learning theory suggests that we learn about gender behaviour through observation and imitation of role models

Albert Cohen (1955) stated it is more difficult process for boys than girls as girls have access to their mothers, while fathers are rather elusive role models and they’re less frequently available

Boys rebel agains socialisation offered by their mothers and pursue opportunities to develop their masculinaty, with Anne Oakley (1972) stating that ‘the dividing line between what is masculine and what is criminal may at times be a thin one’

Q

Explain differences in social control…

A

In patriarchal societies men and fathers dominate

Frances Heidensehn (1985) stated that women are controlled at home, work, and in public, while daughters are unable to stay out as late as sons, and do more housework, where they learn to develop socialising opportunities at home

Women have fewer opportunities to commint crime as adults due to time and movement restrictions given by their roles
