What does ethnicity relate to?
Relates to culture and lifestyle of a particular group
What is ethnic segregation?
The inclusion of exclusion of ethnic groups
What happens when an ethnic group is predominant in an area?
Neighbourhood businesses and institutions are established to support the needs of the particular group
What is ethnic segregation a result of?
Result of deliberate public policies and the way in which authorities think about race
How does power work to create inequalities?
By putting certain groups based on their colour and ethnicity in a less important position within the city
How did migration into Britain create a racist climate? When did it happen? how many people? Who was the main migrant?
The 1962 Commonwealth immigration act put strict quotas on black migrants.
Immigration rose from 6,000 people a year in 1953 to about 46,000 in 1956
What was a typical West Indian Migrant?
A skilled male between 15-40 years old
Who else was negatively stereotyped?
Caribbean migrants
How were they sterotyped?
As lazy, irresponsible and suspicious
What happened to migrants arriving in Britain after the Second World War?
they were forced into poor quality inner city areas
Why did riots take place? Where? When?
Birmingham, Nottingham and London experienced riots in the late 1950s as white people feared the arrival of migrants
Why was there poverty and exclusion?
There were not as many opportunities for migrants such as education and health
