What do we mean by the term social development?
A measure of how well a society is changing for the better or how living standards are improving.
What health data can we use as a measure of social development?
Infant mortality rate, Average life expectancy.
What other indicators can we use to measure social development?
Literacy Rate, Number of people per doctor, Gender development index, Human development index, Maternal mortality rate, Average length of schooling, Fertility rate
What 4 development indicators are averaged to calculate the HDI (Human Development Index)
Average length of schooling in years, Literacy Rate, GNI per capita (PPP), Life expectancy
Has the amount of child labour (children in work) increased or decreased?
Decrease
Why are there child labourers in LIC’s?
School fees and equipment costs, Children need to earn money to support their family.
What types of jobs do child labourers do?
Factory work, Farming, Informal sector e.g recycling rubbish, street vending, shoe cleaning.
What types of jobs are classed as hazardous for children’s health and safety
Underground (mining), Quarries, Dangerous machinery, Manual work, Sex industry.
Why is the amount of child labour probably underestimated?
Girls working doing household chores are not included in data.
What types of jobs do girls do?
Collecting water and firewood, looking after siblings, Cooking
Give 3 reasons why it is important to educate girls
An educated female can pass knowledge onto her child. She will also know how to look after her child better and seek medical help when necessary. Women who are educated get married later and so will have less children therefore less mouths to feed and more money. Education at secondary level and above will give her more job opportunities. An educated mother understands how to cook and provide a balanced diet for her offspring. Recognises the importance of education and so will pass this idea onto her child
According to the ILO (International Labour Organisation)How can we tackle child labour?
Improving access to education, Improving social security systems so that the poorest in society are supported rather than needing to rely on their children, Creating more trade unions so they can prevent and protect against child labour.
