Social Control Flashcards
Define social control.
-Social control is when psychological knowledge is used to
change the behaviour, thoughts and emotions of other people.
What does the British Psychological Society state their aim is?
‘To enhance the development and application of psychology for the greater public good.’
This can be seen when Psychology is used to improve
people’s lives e.g. using therapies to overcome problems. However,
techniques that are developed to produce change can also be used
in more sinister ways such as to persuade people to change their
minds for political reasons or for financial gain.
How is social control used to ‘stop that’.
-Control and restrict someone’s behaviour.
-Prevent them from displaying unwanted behaviours.
-Limit their freedom and individual differences.
How is social control to ‘do this’.
Manipulates and shapes behaviour:
-Usually to fit the norms of society.
-Can be exploited for someone’s gain.
