What is Compliance?
Individual PUBLICLY changes their view/behaviour FIT IN WITH THE MAJORITY GROUPS, but DISAGREES PRIVATELY.
TEMPORARY.
What is Identification?
Individual conforms both publicly and privately because they HAVE IDENTIFIED WITH THE GROUP and feel a SENSE OF BELONGING.
Accepts what they’re doing as right, but with the purpose of FITTING IN WITH GROUP.
OFTEN TEMPORARY
What is Internalisation?
Individual fully accepts the behaviour/belief of the majority group and adopts the belief into their own belief system, BOTH PUBLICLY AND PRIVATELY. PERMANENT.
What is Minority Influence?
A form of social influence where a minority of people (even just one individual) persuade others to adopt their beliefs/behaviours/attitudes.
What is Obedience?
When an individual follows a direct order, usually from a figure of authority who possesses the ability to punish the individual should they not follow said direct order.
What is Conformity?
A change in an individual’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined group pressure.
What is Social Influence?
How we are influenced by other people (either a majority of people or a minority of people) to change our behaviours/beliefs/attitudes.
What is NSI?
Normative Social Influence. This is an explanation for conformity which states that people conform because they seek the social approval of the majority group. This may lead to compliance.
What is ISI?
Informational Social Influence. This is an explanation for conformity which states that people conform to the majority group because they believe that the majority group’s viewpoint/behaviour is correct, so they accept it to be correct as well. This may lead to internalisation.
