How can the police hinder social cohesion?
- Lack of impartial policing
- Failure to explain differences
- Absence of fair and equitable decision making
What is the meaning of community?
The UK is a multi racial multi cultural society
- All the people living in a specific locality
- To specific geographical places
- Body of people having something in common - ie, the black and ethnic minority community, the Muslim community and the working class community
How can the police improve social cohesion?
- Encourage participation
- Working in and with communities
- Brokering relationships
What is discrimination?
The actual physical putting into practice of stereotyping and prejudice
What are the changes in society?
POLITICAL - immigration by Eastern countries, it is a political issue as it is proving to increase crime in particular areas where they choose to live.
ECONOMIC - subject to improved finances, increase in crime through alcohol & ASB.
SOCIETAL - Accept we are a multi cultural and multi racial society.
TECHNICAL - Internet, increase in fraud and crimes such as grooming. Smart phones helping to reduce crime.
ENVIRONMENTAL - Since the 60’s housing has improved.
LEGAL - Human rights applied to the way we treat people.
What is the police response to the changes in society?
POLITICAL - Police employ from ethnic minorities
ECONOMIC - Policing priorities change due to redundancies, changes in working practices.
SOCIETAL - Impartial policing, PCSO’s and SNT.
TECHNICAL - New crime departments, introduction of iPads and blackberrys.
ENVIRONMENTAL - Target crime hotspots
LEGAL - Human rights at the forefront of policing (PLAN).

What is a stereotype?
A generalisation about a group of people that is sometimes distorted
What is a prejudice?
A pre conceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
(Tends to focus on an individual)
What are the five stages of the Allport Scale of Discrimination?
Antilocution - Bad mouthing / name calling
Avoidance - Avoiding people / crossing the street
Discrimination - Starting to put prejudice and stereotyping into action
Physical Attack - Thumped / assault / beaten up
Extermination - Murder / loss of life / suicide
