What is Social Cohesion?

A
  • Refers to the strength of relationships
  • Sense of solidarity among members of a community
  • Minimising disparities and avoiding marginalisation
  • Social connectedness + sense of unity, trust, belonging, acceptance and tolerance.
    => Belonging, Inclusion, Participation, Recognition, Legitimacy.

Social Exclusion

A

Form of social disadvantage encompassing economic and non-economic factors. Excludes individuals from society. e.g. Migrants, Disabled, Homelessness, Indigenous.

A

A set of moral-political-economic principles embodied in a society’s laws, institutions, and government, which determine the relationships, the terms of association, among the people living in a given geographical area. E.g. Family, religion, law, the economy, the church, education, schooling

Sustainable society

A

A society that manages its economy and population size without doing irreparable environmental harm by overloading the planet’s ability to absorb environmental insults, replenish its resources, and sustain human and other forms of life.
During this period, it satisfies the needs of its people without depleting natural resources and thereby jeopardising the prospects of current and future generations of humans and other species.

Social system – religion/church

Ways the church can enhance social cohesion
* Sense of feeling/belonging through
* Food hampers for the poor, op shop + Mission trips/ financial support for poor communities
* Counselling for struggling families
* Friendships + Youth programs

If we are giving food to help those in need, there is reduced likelihood of crime in order to steal to provide food for example. If we are providing counselling to families/people in need we are more likely able to reduce the amount of domestic violence perpetrated.

Ways the church can enhance a Sustainable community?
* Local poor helped, people feeling good and therefore caring for others, some families staying together due to counselling, friendships.

∴ Stable social systems lead to social cohesion within a community….this can in turn lead to a sustainable community
