Social Justice
Refers to the concept of fairness and equality in society, where everyone has access to the same rights, opportunities, and resources regardless of their race, gender, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics.

Diversity
=> Diversity refers to the presence of a variety of different characteristics (race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, disability) within a community.
Human Rights
Human rights are basic rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to, simply by virtue of being human.
=> Protected by laws and international agreements to ensure that individuals are treated with dignity, equality, and fairness, regardless of factors such as race, gender, religion, or nationality.
Article 24: Everyone has the right to rest and leisure.
Addressing Disadvantage
=> Disadvantage refers to those experiencing inequities in life.
=> Refers to taking actions or implementing measures to alleviate inequalities/hardships faced by individuals or groups who are in a less favourable position compared to others in society.
e.g. Personal factors – (age, race, disability) and Structural inequities (health, education, or geographic isolation)
Valuing local knowledge, culture, skills, and resources.
=> Local people know their community + surroundings best and are likely to have the most detailed knowledge of local conditions and potential opportunities for change.
=> Skills developed locally are likely to succeed.
=> Recognizing and appreciating the unique insights, traditions, abilities, and assets that exist within a particular community or region.
Social Justice and Equity

Sense of Belonging
The subjective feeling of deep connection with social groups, physical places, and individual and collective experiences
Social Order
The beliefs and standards that enable stability in a society and help to keep things moving. Helps to prevent chaos and conflict by providing a framework for cooperation.
Social interaction and participation
A person’s involvement in activities that provide interaction with others in the society or the community.
Common Values and a Civic Culture
Shared principles, beliefs, and norms within a society or community that guide individuals’ behaviours and interactions.

A suburban City located in Western Australia (WA). Approximately 12 km south of Perth. Melville is known for its residential neighbourhoods, parks, and proximity to the Swan River. Consists of 18 suburbs, divided into 6 wards.

Sustainability: Urban Forest Strategy
- Protect, preserve, and enhance the leafy character and natural biodiversity of the city.
- Planting, pruning, replacing, and maintaining verge trees with a rule that no one can do these activities without approval.
- Request a Free Verge Tree: Trees planted during the winter planting season for approved requests.
- Tree Expansion: Planting trees on vacant verges and public land to increase canopy coverage and build climate change resilience by reducing urban heating.
- Tree Succession Programs: Replacing aging or declining trees with young ones to ensure continuous canopy cover and biodiversity.
- Benefits: Keeps neighbourhoods cool, supports biodiversity, and improves the liveability of suburbs.
Social Justice: Youth Project Fund
- Supports projects benefiting young people in the local community.
- Encourages active community involvement: Promotes young people as positive community members.
- Promotes social inclusion and diversity: Fosters a sense of equity and opportunity.
- Provides personal development opportunities: Offers skill-building and personal growth.

- Grants range from $500 to $5,000: Applications accepted twice a year.
