social cognitive theory Flashcards
what is socialization?
the process by which a child learns the norms of living in their group
what is the social cognitive theory?
it is a theory proposed by Albert Bandura that states that humans learn behavior through observation and imitation of other members of the group (models)
- these behaviors are acquired, maintained and changed through interactions with the environment. (reciprocal learning)
what are the steps proposed?
- attention: noticing a model (authority, closeness, engagement)
- retention: remembering the behavior (memory: encoding, retrieval, schemas)
- reproduction: being capable of reproducing the behavior (self-efficacy (beliefs in one’s abilities) success, emotional states, social)
- motivation: desire to imitate the behavior (rewards)
reciprocal determinism
we are influenced by and exert an influence on the environment
- personal (emotions, personality, values, etc)
- environmental (social context, norms, laws, etc)
- behavioral factors (actions, decisions, statements)
STUDY ON SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY
Bandura et al 1961
aim: to investigate the effect of children’s exposure to aggressive behavior
- 72 children
- three groups (aggressive, not aggressive, no model)
- higher rates of aggression
- girls= verbal if female, physical if male
- boys = more likely to imitate a male
