what is the difference between white collar jobs and blue collar
White collar jobs are professional jobs with higher positions and normally require some sort of further education
blue collar are Manuel occupations
what are some stats for class difference in education
- 13.4% gap between disadvantaged and non disadvantaged jobs
- will take 70 years for disadvantaged kids to be able to catch up at he current rate of improvement
- when compared to kids the same age disadvantaged kids will do less well in sats, not be able to read
what are the three main external deprivation theories
- Material deprivation
- cultural attitudes, beliefs and values
- socio linguistic
what is cultural deprivation theory?
These theories suggest that the working class lack the necessary economic capital, views, attitudes and support that are needed to succeed in education
what is one advantage of middle class people have?
Middle class people decide what is in our education system which then leads to their kids are better suited to strive in the education system
What did Douglas study show holds back disadvantaged kid?
- Low income families are disadvantaged in education system
- overcrowded homes
- poor diets
- low income/unemployment
- taking up part time jobs
- disadvantaged poverty stricken areas
these problems will accumulate and hold back these people
What are some cases of how disadvantaged kids suffer?
Howard (2001) poverty and poor diet that kids miss out on some vitamins because of their diet.
Wilkinson(1996) poorer homes and hyper diversity that kids in poorer homes can have behavioral problems
what is cultural capital
Having a familiarity with the legitimate culture within society middle class families have a lot as it is there culture which is dominant in society

W/C people and communities have different values, attitudes and beliefs

what are some traits of working class people?
Fatalism/ fatalistic view- negative perspective view of life
immediate gratification- spend any extra money quickly instead of saving
present time orientation- working class people have to focus on the now
traits of the middle class?
- optimistic view of education as a privilege of their class
- differing gratification any money they gain they can afford to put it to the side
- future orientation- not worry so much on the now but can think very forward in advance

- the culture of education as giving an inbuilt advantage to the middle class
- each social class possess its own cultural framework known as habits
- m/c have different attitude, language values, life
- m/c have no cultural capital instead its there economical parent

What are restrictive and elaborated codes?
- Restricted code is used by the working class and is based on short, often unfinished, grammatically simple sentences - elaborated is used by the middle class and uses complex and a range of vocubulary
How does parents education have an affect?
W/C parents placed little to no value on education resulting in kids having less ambition
- also they gave less encouragement to educational progression and took less of an interest
M/C encourage kids to replicate there own educational success
