race in education Flashcards
what are some stats for black achievement in the UK in education?
Gilborn and Mirza talk on how black kids are the highest achievers at sats but one of the worse ay GCSE
explain what labelling is and how it affects black and other Bame students?
- labelling is the action of attaching a name and characteristic to a student
- Many Bame kids find themselves being labelled as being disruptive or aggressive
- These negative labels can lead to unfair or unjust treatment of schools
What does Gillborn and Youdell say about labelling and how it affects black youths?
- There are radicalized expectations of black youths which can lead to self fulfilling prophecies
- These negative stereotypes of black youths results in them being put in disadvantaged positions like being put in lower sets so there sets are based on behavior labels rather then academic potential
what are the three types of pupil which Louise archer spoke about?
1- ideal pupil, white, submissive, middle class, masculinized, child that achieves academic success through the ‘right way’
2- Pathologized pupil identity - feminize, seen as conformist, an over achiever that got success through natural ability and hard work
3- demolished pupil identity - working class, hyper sexualized identity, led by peers, both culturally and materially deprived, standard underachiever
What did traya and Williams say are the two types of racism that show itself in the education system?
Individual racism- prejudiced view of teachers and other faculty members
Institutional racism- discrimination that is built into the way an institution runs
What is locked in equality
Institutional racism is inevitable in the education system and deeply entrenched
What is a Ethnocentric curriculum
This is when the curriculum reflects the culture of one dominant group
E.g language, literature
How does the British ethnocentric curriculum affect BAME pupils
They often will feel left out as the curriculum doesn’t include them and specifies to British only.
E.g history focuses on the mythical age of the empire and ignores BAME contributions
What did Bernard say the ethnocentric curriculum do
He says it undermines BAME peoples self esteem
What is involved in recolonising the curriculum
Recognising and challenging colonial roots and western biases of what we teach
What did Steve stand find out about teacher expectations
He found that teacher expectations lead to many BAME pupils being denied entry to higher tiers and in the exam
What was Holborn new IQism
- found black kids placed in lower sets disproportionately due to teacher expectations and assumptions
- teachers are deciding sets based on attitude rather then educational prowess
How does Holborn criticise teachers and policies
He says that they assume that potential is a fixed amount and can’t grow but is a set amount.
“Race inequality is a constant and central feature of the education system”
What are some criticism of Holborn
Sewell said that in regards to black boys we must look for external factors for there lack of success
- idea that Indian and Asian kids are overachieving and that the education must not be racist if they can succeed
How does Gilborn respond to his criticisms
That the image of Indians and Asians being ideal pupils is an idealogical function and conceals the fact that the system is still racist
- justifies the failures of other minorities
