Social class diffrences in achievement(external)- Theorists Flashcards
Bernstein
identifies the differences between the language the m/c and w/c use. The restricted code and the elaborated code
Douglas
found w/c parents placed less value on education. They were less ambitious for their children, gave less encouragement, took less interest, visited schools less and were less likely to discuss their child’s progress with teachers
Feinstein
argues m/c parents tend to be better educated and are more positive towards education. They do this through their; parenting style, educational behaviours, use of income and class income and parental education.
Sugarman
the w/c have 4 key beliefs that act as a barrier to success; Fatalism, Collectivism, Immediate gratification and present time orientation.
Keddie
Myth of Cultural deprivation- argues underachievement is not due to having a culturally deprived background. A child cannot be deprived of its own culture instead children are not culturally deprived but culturally diffrent.
Blackstone and Mortimore
Criticised the idea that w/c parents do not care about their child’s education. They attend less parents evening because they work longer hours and have more children to look after, they are put off by the m/c atmosphere of school, they want to help but lack the knowledge to help and schools with mainly w/c children have less effective ways of contacting home.
