Cultural Deprivation

Subculture

Fatalism
belief in fate ‘whatever will be will be’ and there is nothing to do to change your status
Collectivism
value of being part of a group more than succeeding as an individual
Immediate gratification
seeking pleasure right now rather than making sacrifices in order to get rewarded
Present time orientation
believing the present is more important than the future
Compensatory education
programmes that aim to tackle the problem of cultural deprivation by providing extra resources to schools and communities in deprived areas- Sesame street.
Material deprivation
poverty and a lack of material necessities such as housing and income
Cultural Capital
refers to the knowledge, values and language tastes and abilities of the m/c
Habitus
taken for granted ways of thinking being and acting shared by a particular social class
