Social Change Flashcards
What has social influence research suggested?
It is minorities and independent behaviour that brings about social change
What are the 3 key factors of social impact theory by Latand and Wolf?
- Strength of message
- Status and knowledge
- Immediacy
How can strength of message be achieved?
By either strength of numbers or consistency
How can status and knowledge be achieved?
One person with expert knowledge may have similar influence to a majority of non experts
What 4 behavioural styles did Moscovici believe effected social influence?
- Consistency
- Flexibility
- Commitment
- Relevance
What is consistency?
Beliefs must appear strong and consistent over time, if this does not happen the majority will not pay attention, if you are consistent you seem more sincere and genuine
What is flexibility?
Unreasonable consistency has a negative effect on influcence, however minorities risk being seen as inconsistent if they are too flexible on views
What is commitment?
If a member of the group desserts, this damages their consistency and unity
What is relevance?
The message must be relevant to social trends in order to make a convincing argument for people to yield to the minority
What do the snowball effect?
As some individuals adopt the minority view, they start to influence a greater number or people. The change gains momentum and influences more people this can lead to social crypto amnesia
What is social cryptoamnesia?
The minority view has become the majority and people have forgotten it was ever a minority view
