Social Causes of Poverty Flashcards
world issues
education
POINT
one social cause of poverty in the developing world is poor education. poor education exists due to marginalisation, lack of teachers and an underdeveloped economy.
education
EXPLAIN
marginalisation means that children cannot get access to education because girls for cultural reasons are expected to marry and start a family, it is not seen as important for girls to get an education and boys are expected to work instead of going to school. lack of teachers is due to the cost of running an education system, training and employing teachers and employing teachers. a lack of teachers leads to oversized classes and undertrained, uneducated teachers. if an economy is weak, the government won’t have money to build and fund schools.
education
EXAMPLE
according to the united nations girls’ education initiative, more than 700,000 girls in uganda aged between 6 and 12 have never attended school

lack of infrastructure
POINT
infrastructure is the basic physical and organisational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise
lack of infrastructure
EXPLAIN
lack of infrastructure is a problem for rural communities because farmers can produce crops to sell but poor roads prevent them from transferring their produce to bigger towns and cities which means they cannot sell them. this can also impact individuals not being able to get access to school, or hospitals.
lack of infrastructure
EXAMPLE
ethiopia needs new airports, railways, electricity grids etc if it is to trade internationally. in 2022, 600 million people (half of africa’s population) still lacked access to electricity.
lack of infrastructure
ANALYSIS
lack of roads/transport -> people cannot access basic needs -> lack of sewage system -> people are drinking dirty water -> ill health -> ill people cannot be helped/kids can’t go to school -> more people cannot work, earn money or contribute to the economy.
lack of infrastructure
EVALUATION
many governments are now spending money on improving infrastructure because they see it as a key method in transforming their country into a valuable trading partner. in october 2023, the uk announced that there would be a £48 million boost in funding to improve infrastructure in lower income countries.
