Political Causes of Poverty Flashcards
world issues
conflict
POINT
armed conflicts are fights/disagreements which involve land and/or the governments where weapons are used and at least 25 people have been killed.
conflict
EXPLAIN
many countries in the developing world have weak governments who make decisions which negatively impact citizens become aware of this it can lead to conflict. many developing countries see the emergence of rebel groups who fight against the government because of itts poor decision making which can lead to poverty through education, health and infrastructure being negatively impacted. child soldiers are often used in armed conflict.
conflict
EXAMPLE
according to the world bank, poverty rates are 20% higher in countries affected by repeated cycles of violence.
conflict
ANALYSIS
conflict results in poverty amongst citizens within the developing world for many reasons. often important buildings such as schools and hospitals are destroyed or used as military bases which means citizens cannot get treatment for illnesses or education. both issues result in poverty. conflict can result in destruction of a country’s infrastructure meaning people are isolated and there is a lack of employment. many farmers have land destroyed and cannot grow crops to earn money or end up volunteering and therefore do not produce food to feed the population.
conflict
EVALUATION
however, although when conflict does occur it ultimately leads to poverty, it cannot be seen as a main cause of poverty in all developing countries. there are many countries facing huge issues with poverty which have very little or no significant experience of conflict.
conflict
LINK TO Q
it is therefore not the most important factor in all developing countries.
weak government
POINT
a government may not be corrupt but it may make bad decisions which results in poverty in a country.
weak government
EXPLAIN
often poor decisions involve money - governments often do not prioritise their spending and do not spend money on things that are required to improve the country’s development. when a government is not well-educated or experienced itself, often it fails to make decisions which could improve important areas such as infrastructure and health and safety. this means that the areas that could help solve poverty are underfunded and makes conflict much more likely also.
weak government
EXAMPLE
ghana’s government do not prioritise healthcare spending and now only has 1.4 doctors per 10,000.
weak government
ANALYSIS
a government making poor decisions means the education of the country suffers and so dies the health. this not only means individual people are more likely to experience poverty, but it means the entire country is at risk of becoming poor as there will not be enough people to work and help the country advance. failing to make decisions to change this can mean the country will not see investment from countries and will be trapped in a never-ending cycle of poverty.
weak government
EVALUATION
however, the world health organisation (the who) have made a commitment to work with countries to help them strengthen their ability to fund healthcare systems. it works with governments in developing countries to help them understand hwo they can raise money to fund healthcare in their country or effectively use money given by support agencies or international community.
weak government
LINK TO Q
meaning countries with weaker governments are being given some support to help their spending, but this is not something that will be solved quickly.
