Social Behavior In Insects Flashcards
Eusociality Criteria
- Division of labor (caste systems) 2. Cooperative brood care 3. Overlapping generations (several seasons) 4. Use Tropholaxis for communication
polymorphism
Having different shapes/sizes as adults within the same gender based on the insect’s role in society
Hymenopterans v. Isopterans
Hymenoptera-hives made of females only, males are haploid drones, trophogenesis (job determined at birth), holometabolous. Isoptera-hives are 50/50 gender with king and queen, all are diploid, poleyethism (job determined by age), hemimetabolous.
Trophogenesis
feeding larvae different things depending on their job as adults (queens-royal jelly, workers-bee bread, drones-pure honey)
Polyethism
Using age to determine the job an insect does
Inquilines
Insects that sneak into other insect hives and use Wassmannian mimicry to deceive them and get their food and protection
Dulosis
slave-making behavior amongst insects (ants will enslave other ants)
