Social Area Evaluation Flashcards
What are the principles in the social area
= looks at how our behaviour is influenced by the real or imagined presence of others and the groups around us
= looks at how our behaviour is influenced by the situation/social context we are in
Similarities between milgram and bocchiaro
SAMPLING - self selected
= milgram used advert in newspaper and direct mail
= bocchiaro used flyers around the uni
Differences between milgram and bocchiaro
Milgram less ethical
= had high levels of distress
= many upset & 2 had seizures
= given verbal prods
Bocchiaro
= participants protected from harm
= low stress situation (write statement)
= left alone to decide whether to obey or not rather than verbal prods
Strengths of social area
Practical applications
Real life relevance as it focuses on social issues eg. obedience + how behaviour can be changed for better
Good Range of Research Methods
All experimental , but social psychologists use interviews, questionaries, observations, experiments to study how people behave in different social contexts
Weaknesses of Social Area
Raises ethical issues
=Milgram’s study decieved, caused distrell, verbal prods to continue
Social Determinism
= suggests behaviour is determined by our social context
= no free will over our behaviour + lead to idea we have no individual responsibility
Low valdidity
= difficult to seperate effects of social/situational influences on behviour from individual factors eg. personality
Similarities between Pilivan + Levine
Both Independent measures design
=Pilivan had different groups of participants either drunk or cane victim
= Levine had different groups of participants in each country
Both quantitative data
= Pilivan observers noted the total no.passangers who helped victim, how long it took for them to help, sex, race
= Levine = purchasing power parity, whether or not they helped(each condition), population size, simpatia or not
Differences between Pilivan and Levine
Different types of experiment
Pilivain = field experiment (NY)
Levine = quasi experiment (people in different countries naturally occuring)
