Q

what is group think ?

A

. simple definition= The psychological processes that happen within a group affect our behaviour

explanation= There is a strong desire for members to agree with each other, regardless of whether decisions are correct or not.

. members quickly stop analysing decisions and, instead of looking for weaknesses, they convince themselves the reason for the decision is sound.

They refuse to listen to alternatives and actively discourage opposing views.

Q

explain the group think case study ?

A

In April 1969 the US government and President John F. Kenedy tried to forcibly remove the communist dictator of Cuba with the support of the US military. However, the invasion was a disaster and one of the biggest foreign policy mistakes ever made.

. The decision to do this was made by a group of 50 experts and the Kenedy. The president at the time said, “How could we have been so stupid?”

. Psychologist, Janis, believed this was caused by group-think, their desire to agree with each other was stronger than their motivation to realistically consider alternatives courses of action. Causing the president to make a rash decision and invade

Q

Strength on intra group dynamics=

A

practical applications= groupthink can be avoided by including people from outside of the group, breaking the group into smaller subgroups and encouraging people within the group to be critical of each other. Cohesion has also been used in therapy groups to reduce the symptoms of depression. Therefore, improving intra group dynamics can have benefits for groups, individuals or organisations.
