Social And Cultural Influences Flashcards
Bauhaus
The Bauhaus design was a German art school that ran from 1919 to 1933, it combined crafts and the fine arts. It was very influential on modern art, affecting things such as, graphic design, interior design and typography.
Saul Bass was influenced by Bauhaus as they both aimed for simple yet functional designs. Nothing too complicated or fussy. They were modern and imaginative. Bass looked for the ‘simple idea’, using simple images for movie posters, behind a complicated film plot.
1920’s and 1930’s Graphic Design
Bass Grew up in NYC and was influenced by bright and bold designs that were seen in Magazines and Posters that had bold images and clever advertising slogans.
This influence can be seen through Bass as his move posters have bright and bold images and colours that instantly grab your attention .
Herbert Bayer
Growing up in NYC, allowed Bass to see inside major art galleries and see the work of Herbert Bayer. Bayer was well known for simple, modern style, alike Bauhaus designers.
Alike Bass, he often used all lower case typefaces which was very modern at the time, clearly influencing Saul Bass.
Swiss Design Style
SDS started in Switzerland in 1940’s. This style is known to be direct, clear and simple. The message were always easy and clear to understand.
It was recognised for asymmetric layouts and combining shapes and patterns in posters. This can be seen through Bass’ posters through the bold simple text and asymmetric layout.
European Poster Design
These designs were less obvious than American posters. Bass liked how the EPD gave a feeling of impression about what they were advertising. They wanted the public to see/think more and not just see an obvious poster. This can be seen through Bass posters where he suggests the emotions from the movies such as fear or madness by the simple shapes and colours he uses.
