Two assumptions ( social )
- Behaviour occurs in a social context.
- Wider culture & society influences people’s behaviour.
What does NSI stand for and what does it mean?
Normative Social Influence.
We accept the groups norms because we want to be accepted.
What does ISI stand for and what does it mean?
Informational Social Influence.
We accept the groups norms because we think that they have the correct information.
What is compliance?
To conform externally, but continue to disagree internally.
What is identification?
When someone conforms internally as well as externally because they have identified with the group and feel a sense of membership.

What is internalisation?
When someone conforms internally and externally because they have internalised and accepted the views of the group.

What is categorisation & give examples
Putting people into social groupings based on their shared characteristics.
- ethnicity, race, gender.
What is a stereotype?
A generalised belief about a particular category of people usually formed from a superficial perception of the characteristics of the group.
What is prejudice?
A feeling of unfair dislike directed against an individual or a group because of certain characteristics.
What is discrimination?
Often the outcome of prejudice towards an out-group. People are excluded due to skin colour, gender etc.
What are common goals ?
Common goals is when a group share goals. This can help individuals understand their place in what they may see as a large and impersonal organisation.
What is group think?
Instead of looking for weaknesses, they convince themselves the reasons for their decisions are sound.
What is group cohesion?
Members perceive themselves as similar because they have common goals.
What is social facilitation?
When group members work together on a relatively simple task, the presence of others can enhance an individual’s performance.
What is self-concept?
A persons organised system of beliefs, attitudes and opinions about who they are.
What is self-efficacy?
The extent to which we are confident we can achieve a successful outcome
What is self-esteem?
The extent to which we accept and like ourselves.
What is Self-image?
Your awareness of your mental and physical characteristics.
