Social 1) Dysfunctional Families Flashcards
Lidz et al.
Two theories:
1) Dominant mother theory - mother has dominant views, father is passive, underlying hostilities in family, mostly affects boys.
2) Marital conflict (schism) - mostly affects females, a lot of parental conflict, child fears upsetting one or other parent.
Sharan
- Criticises Lidz, claims that the theories have no validity
Bateson
Lack of communication can cause schizophrenia, divides into verbal vs. non-verbal.
E.g. child is asked a question (verbal), when child replies parent is focused on something else (non-verbal), child becomes insular.
Brown
Research on relapse; males more likely to relapse, depends on who you live with after treatment.
If you live with parents after treatment you are more likely to relapse, if you live alone, it is likely.
EE - Expressed Emotion Theory
3 types of EE: 1) Critical comments. 2) Level of hostility. 3) Emotional over involvement. Ways to measure it: 1) Observation. 2) Family Attitude Survey. 3) Level of expressed emotion.
Hooley and Parker
Level of schizophrenia depends on number of people at home who have a negative attitude and are controlling.
Vaughan and Leff
Relapse rates; if families have high EE levels there is 53% chance of relapse, low EE levels - 13% of relapse.
McCredie and Philips
EE factor is only an element of schizophrenia caused by dysfunctional families.
Cheng
Depends on culture.
E.g. in the West - high EE levels and high relapse rates are common compared to China.
Philips and Xiang
Vicious cycle of cause and effect; a schizophrenic in the family can cause stress and stress can cause schizophrenic.
