By the mid-twentieth century, European immigrant groups described in Week One had combined to form a white racial majority in the United States.
Today, Blacks, Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and non-white Europeans interact with the white majority in a system of race that can be broadly described as comprising whites and non-whites, whites and racial minorities, or whites and people of color.
While unique ethnic groups share a culture in which ethnic conflict is present, including pressures to assimilate, the broader culture also celebrates the unique culture of many ethnic groups in America.
Write a paper in which you evaluate a selected major ethnic group in the United States. Please elaborate on the following points in your essay:
a. Select an ethnic group from among those discussed in Chapters 5 through 9.
b. Examine the history of this group in the United States, including immigration, assimilation, conflict with other ethnic groups, and other issues of interest.
c. Provide an example of a widely held myth or misconception about this ethnic group. How do we know this is a myth? Why is this myth so difficult to abandon?

Describe the society selected for your paper. This could be a nation, other than the U.S., or possibly a large ethnic group within another country. Discuss why you believe this is an appropriate topic for your Final Paper.
Outline
Using the sample below as a guide, provide an outline for your Final Paper.
Select and analyze a society demonstrating ethnic stratification and conflict, including evidence of prejudice and discrimination. In addition to a description of the selected society, papers should include an analysis of similarities and differences as compared to the United States.
While the following example can be modified to suit your needs, this outline is likely to result in a high quality Final Paper:
a. Title
b. Describe the selected society, focusing on ethnic groups, stratification, and conflict.
c. Provide examples of the problem, including evidence of prejudice and discrimination.
d. What do the experts say about ethnic problems (or ethnic harmony) in the selected society?
e. Compare the selected society to the United States. Evaluate similarities and difference related to ethnic groups, stratification, and conflict, using specific examples gathered in your research.
f. Conclude with reflections and thoughts about ethnic groups and the societies in which we live. This is a good place to include personal opinions, assuming you wish to share them in a research paper.
g. References: Provide at least five sources from the Ashford Online Library that you plan to include in your Final Paper.
