Culture

Dominant Culture
Impose values, language and ways of behaving and interpenetrating behavior on society.
Dominants
closely linked with the cultural mainstream
Countercultures
minority that feel the power of the dominant culture
Minority
fall outside the cultural mainstream
Subcultures
minority cultures that differ in some way from the dominant culture but do not directly oppose it
High Culture
culture is elite , a distinct minority (the arts)
Popular Culture
culture of the majority, especially those who have no power
Social Capital
economic resources garnered from human interactions
Mass Culture
people who have little or no agency in the culture they consume
Norms
rules or standards of behavior that are expected of a group, society or culture
Sanctions
rewards and punishment in response to a behavior
Pos Sanctions
rewards ( doing the right thing )
Neg sanctions
violated a norm
Folkways
govern day to day matters ( we should not violate )
Mores
must not violate, serious sanctions ( rape, stealing )
Taboos
norms deeply ingrained in us, mention of it is disgust like ( incest, child pornography)
Symbols
cultural items that hold significance for a culture or subculture
Values
standards used by cultures to describe qualities ( goodness, beauty)
Ideal Culture
is what people believe in
Actual Culture
what really exsists
Ethnocentrism
someone holds one culture as being a standard culture for someone else ( white people with the FN )
Euro centrism
addressing others or an audience who want to be apart of that position
Cultural Globalization
intensification and expansion of cultural flows across the globe.
Cultural Relativism
understand an aspect of another culture within proper social, historical and environmental context
Presentism
judge figures of the past within their own time, but instead we judge people by today standards ( sir john a MacDonald)
Sociolingusitics
studying of language as apart of culture
Dialect
variety of language that differs from others in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar
Linguistic Determinism
the way we view and understand the world is shaped by the language we speak.
