Soaps Flashcards
Name a soap
Sodium Stearate
How can we use soaps?
And why over water?
Can be used to remove fats or oils greasy stains from foods. Since fats and oils are non polar they don’t dissolve in water instead soap is required
Describe the:
covalent hydrocarbon chain
Ionic head
Hydrophobic (non polar)
Hydrophillc. (Polar)
Describe soap at work
Hydrocarbon chain bonds easily to greasy stains (hydrophobic) it covers the grease in negative charges causing the grease to separate and become water soluble
Describe detergents
Soap like structures which don’t form scummy precipitates as they have different polar heads from soaps
Describe emulsifiers
Used to keep water soluble and oil soluble compounds together. They are widely used in food industry and have a non polar and polar part leading to flexible solubilities
What are soaps
Fatty acid salts formed from the alkaline hydrolysis of fats or oils
What are emulsions
Liquid which contains droplets if another liquid
