Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins?
Nitrogen containing compounds with functions in the human body
Give examples of proteins
Hormones
Muscle fibres
Amylase
What are enzymes
Examples of proteins which catalyse chemical reactions in the body, each enzyme has a unique shape due to change in temp or Ph
What are amino acids
Smaller molecules that make up proteins they contain amine group (-NH2) and carboxylate group (-COOH)
How do you make proteins
Several amino acids react together to form protein molecule. Amine group and carboxyl group react to form amide link and water
What is the amide or peptide link
H. O
N. C
C O double bond
What are essential amino acids?
Proteins that have to be obtained from the diet
Describe Protein digestion process
Hydrolysis - protein is broken down to individual amino acids peptide link to broken to form carboxylic and amine groups in amino acids
Describe hydrogen bonding in proteins
Proteins and amino acids contain N-H
Long strands of protein can bended into different shapes due to strength of bonding
