SN2 Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
How many steps are in an SN2 rxn?
A
One step - concerted rxn.
2
Q
What happens to the stereochemistry of a stereogenic center when an SN2 rxn occurs at the center?
A
The configuration flips. R becomes S, and S becomes R.
3
Q
What happens to the rate of an SN2 rxn as the # of R groups on the alpha C increase?
A
The rate of the SN2 rxn decreases. (The steric hinderance of the additional groups makes a backside attack more difficult)
4
Q
What order is an SN2 rxn?
A
2nd order - rate is dependent on con. of the alkyl halide and the Nu.
