sn1 Flashcards
1
Q
what happens in sn1
A
racemic mix is made due to the trigonal planar shape of the CC+ (sp2 hybridised) R+ S formed
nucs can attack the empty p orbitals from any side.
2
Q
what else can happen instead of racemization
A
inversion of configuration
bc halide is still close to CC+ and repels the nuc
nuc attacks the opposite side of the bond broken
3
Q
why do benzenes or double bonds normally undergo sn1 even if they’re primary alpha carbons
A
they can stabilise the CC+ using mesomeric effects
(eg: positive charge is shared between more C’s)
