What is nicotine and why is it bad?
The addictive substance. It is increases heart rate and blood pressure, and makes blood vessels narrower than normal, leading to heart disease
What is tar and why is it bad?
Causes cancer of the lungs, mouth and throat. It coats the inside of the lungs, including the alveoli, causing coughing. Damaging the alveoli makes it more difficult for gas exchange to occur
What is carbon monoxide and why is it bad?
Takes the place of oxygen by attaching to red blood cells, reducing the amount of oxygen the blood can carry. This means the circulatory system has to work harder, causing heart disease.
What is CHD?
Coronary artery disease - when the blood vessels to the heart are narrowed or blocked
How does smoking affect the phelgm and cilia?
Smoking damages your cilia so the phlegm cannot travel and remove the captured bacteria from the body
