Breathing Flashcards
What is the pathway of oxygen to the red blood cell in order?
- Nostril
- Pharynx/Nasal Cavity
(Past epiglotis) - Larynx/Voicebox
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli -> Capillary wall -> Red blood cell -> Tissues (respiration)
Where are the internal intercostal muscles located?
Between the ribs
What is the process of inhalation in order?
- Diaphragm contracts
- External intercostal muscles contract
- Chest cavity volume increases
- Pressure inside lungs decreases
- Atmospheric pressure is higher than in the lungs
- Air flows from high to low pressure: into the lungs
What is the process of exhalation in order?
- Diaphragm relaxes
- Internal intercostal muscles contract
- Chest cavity volume decreases
- Pressure inside lungs increases
- Atmospheric pressure is lower than in the lungs
- Air moves from high to low pressure: exits the lung
What do red blood cells contain to carry oxygen?
Haemoglobin
What is the atmospheric air composition during inhalation?
Oxygen: 21%
Carbon dioxide: 0.04%
What is the atmospheric air composition during exhalation?
Oxygen: 17%
Carbon dioxide: 4%
What is mucus?
A sticky phelgm that traps bacteria/foreign particles in the trachea and bronchi. Cilia sweep the mucus into the throat
What are cilia?
Little hairs that aid the movement of bacteria and other substances through parts of the body
What is the pleural cavity?
The area between the ribs and lungs, is filled with fluid
From which component does the oxygen get absorbed into the lungs?
Alveoli
