Why is smoke harmful to the lungs and respiratory passages
1) It is hot
2) It has a drying effect

Emphysema
How does emphysema occur
The walls break down resulting in less surface area for gas exchange and breathing becomes very difficult
How does smoke harm the lungs
1) Particles trigger the action of phagocytes and mucus secreting cells so more mucus is produced.
2) Dries out the lining of the lungs
3) Chemicals may trigger extra cell division and start growth of tumors.
Why are smokers more likely to develop and infection
Cilia are lost and so cannot remove bacteria trapped in mucus.
