Smoking Flashcards
Why is it important to have a good blood supply going to the lungs?
So that oxygen from the air can easily enter the bloodstream/ body and carbon dioxide can easily leave the bloodstream / body.
there are 4 main reasons smoking is bad, what are they?
1) carbon monoxide
2) nicotine
3) tar
4) particulates
Tar covers the tiny hairs on your airways, what are these hairs called?
the hairs are called cilia.
if your cilia gets damaged what happens?
your throat cannot clear mucus properly.
the more mucus in your throat means the more you…
the more mucus = more coughing.
mucus caused you to cough.
smoking can cause three cancers, what cancers are they?
1) lung
2) throat
3) mouth
What is meant by lung volume?
The amount of air you can breathe into your lungs in a single breath.
What does a spirometer measure?
lung volume
Give two changes that can happen to your gas exchange system if you excersise regularly over a long period of time.
The muscles you will use to breathe will get stronger/ your chest cavity will open up more and you will be able to get more air into your lungs
Explain why a person’s airways narrow during an asthma attack.
The muscles around their bronchioles contract , the lining becomes inflamed and fluid builds up.
Which gas enters the blood from the alveoli ( air sacs) ?
Bronchus
Which gas leaves the blood to enter the lungs at the alveoli ( air sacs)
Oxygen
Describe what happens to chest cavaty as you breathe in.
When you breathe in, the diaghram contracts and moves down and the ribs move up. This increases the volume of the chest cavity , which decreases the pressure and causes air to rush into the lungs.
Name four harmful substances present in cigarette smoke.
tar,nicotine, carbon monoxide and particulates.
Explain why tar in cigeratte smoke causes smokers to cough more.
Tar from ciggerattes damages the cilia in a smoker’s airways which means they can’t get rid of mucus properly. The mucus sticks in the airways and causes them to cough.
