Smog of stubble burning Flashcards
What is Smog?
-fog + dust + air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, etc. which combine with sunlight to form a dense layer of ground-level ozone->it can cause irritating health effects.
[FOG + DUST + AIR POLLUTANTS + SUNLIGHT = GROUND LEVEL OZONE]
Who coined the term ,when?
Dr Henry Antoine ,1905,London
What are the components of smog and which body part do they affect?
- ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and PM10s.
- affects lungs
What can cause smog?
1.Huge coal-burning
2.Slash-and-burning of crops
3.automobile exhausts, power plants, fireworks, even paint, hairspray, charcoal starter fluid, and plastic popcorn packaging
[COAL BURN(POWER PLANT) ; CROP BURN ; VEHICLES ;FIREWORK ; PAINT]
Which environmental conditions affect smog?
Temperature, sunshine, and calm winds.
Warmer the better for smog
Which are types of smog?
1.Sulfurous smog(i.e.London smog)
high concentration of sulfur oxides
2.Photochemical smog
sunlight + oxides of nitrogen + one volatile organic compound (VOC)
What are the health impacts of smog?
- inflame breathing passage->like cigarette smoking
2.inflamed lungs->blood clots-> cardiac & respiratory disorders->heart attacks or strokes - dry out protective membranes nose & throat
4.reduces body’s ability to resist infection -> more illness
5.decreased UV radiation-> low production of elements like Vit.D
[BREATHING PASSAGE ; LUNGS ; HEART ; NOSE/THROAT MEMBRANE ; REDUCES IMMUNITY]
