BASIC IDEA
A
additional claims can be brought into federal court even though the claims do not invoke diversity of citizenship or federal question
- case must already be in federal court
- focuses on additional claims
- federal court MUST have subject matter jurisdiction over EVERY claim in the case

A
- The test:
- must share a COMMON NUCLEUS OF OPERATIVE FACT with the claim that invoked Federal SMJ
- test ALWAYS met when a claim arises from the same transaction or occurrence.

HOW- THE LIMITATION ON THE TEST
A
Claims by plaintiffs cannot invoke supplemental jurisdiction UNLESS:
- there are multiple plaintiffs, AND the claim by one of them does not meet the amount in controversy requirement.
certain claims cannot invoke supplemental jurisdiction even though they meet the test.
the limitation ONLY applies in diversity of citizenship cases.
