SMED Flashcards
What does SMED allow for in production?
Mass customisation (agile)
(Improved quality and efficiency when changing from one product to another)
What is changeover?
the process of changing from one production process to another
what is changeover time?
The total time elapsed from the last good product from a production run to the first good product of the next run at full production rate
What is a quick changeover?
An efficiency improved activity that focuses on reducing the changeover time but also the cost and effort required to perform a changeover
Benefits of quick changeover
Increased production capacity
increased OEE
Reduced batch sizes
Decreased inventory levels
reduced lead times
More agile to customer demand
What determines the initiation of changeovers
Pull system
Six stages of changeover improvement
Observe and measure the total changeover time
Separate internal and external steps
Convert as many internal steps as possible to external
Eliminate waste from internal steps
Eliminate waste from external steps
Standardise and maintain the new changeover procedure
What is an internal step?
Steps that can only be done when production is stopped
ie remove dies
change blades
loosening or tightening critical bolts
What is an external step?
Something that can be done whilst production is still running
ie paperwork, clean up, tool prep
Some examples of ways to convert internal steps to external
heat the die after installation —> preheat the die
Gather tools —> have the tools stationed ready
sign off paperwork —> complete it after production has started
Ways to eliminate waste in internal steps
Spaghetti diagram tracks movement of operator
Relocate items to reduce wasted movement
How can you standardise and maintain?
Document
Communicate
Train
Measure, post , track
