Smart Materials Flashcards
What is a life cycle?
The stages the product goes through from when it was first released to when it is taken off the market.
What is Polymorph?
Polymorth is a thermoplastic polymer which melts at 62°C and consists of white plastic granules which fuse together when melted in hot water to form a transparent flexible material which can be molded to form unique shapes. It is completely biodegradable and non-toxic.
What is thermochromism?
Thermochromism is the property of a substance which enable it to change colour due to changes in temperature. It’s a reversible change.
What is smart grease?
Smart grease is a sticky and viscous gel which makes the movement of objects have a “slowed down” effect.
What is a shape-memory alloy?
A shape-memory alloy is a material which can be molded into different shapes but when heated, it will return to its original position.
What is a piezoelectric material?
Piezoelectric materials can product a small electrical voltage when squeezed rapidly.
What is thermochromic paint?
Thermochromic inks or dyes are temperature sensitive compounds, developed in the 1970s, that temporarily change color with exposure to heat. They come in two forms, liquid crystals and leuco dyes. Leuco dyes are easier to work with and allow for a greater range of applications.
What can smart grease be used for?
It can be used in prototype applications to improve performance or it can be used in novel applications such as wound-up motors to provide uniform speed.
