What are smart materials?
Smart materials are designed materials that have one or more properties that can be significantly changed in a controlled fashion by external stimuli, such as stress, temperature, moisture, pH, electric or magnetic fields.
Define Sustainability
The ability or capacity to be maintained in a constant state.
What are SMART materials?
Smart materials are reactive materials. Their properties can be changed by exposure to stimuli, such as electric and magnetic fields, stress, moisture and temperature.
Define Market Pull
When product ideas are produced in response to market focuses such as demand from consumers
Define Technology Push
New technologies allowing new products to be created.
Technology Push definition
Technology push is when products are re-designed because of changes in materials or manufacturing methods. This might mean that new materials have become available, with improved properties; or that improvements in manufacturing processes mean a manufacturer can make the product cheaper or more efficiently, which reduces manufacturing costs.
Ergonomics definition
The study of people’s efficiency in their working environment.
Anthropometry definition
The measurement of the size and proportions of the human body, esp. as an aid for comparative study in physical anthropology.
Where do we get most of our energy from?
A large amount of energy comes from burning fossil fuels
What are composite materials?
Composite materials consist of two or more materials which are put together to form composites. They have various useful properties - for example, carbon fibre, which is made of carbon fibres bonded with flexible resin, is very strong and lightweight.
what are the three main pillars of sustainability
Economy, Society, Environment
what is fuel?
A fuel is a store of energy
what is the definition of globalization?
the process of product manufacturing being made and sold world wide
What are SMART colours?
Smart colours are pigments which can be incorporated into paints, dyes, inks and plastics.
Definition of poly morph
Polymorph is available in small pellets which fuse together when heated to 62˚C. It can be moulded into shape resulting in a very tough polymer. Unused pellets can be re-heated and re-used
